Fredy’s Car Puzzle



Fredy decided to go on a long drive with his girl friend on a deserted highway to discuss about his marriage with a condition that, if she solves the puzzle – Fredy will marry her, otherwise he will say bye to her on the highway. Fredy asked his girl friend, on this deserted highway, the probability of observing a car during a thirty-minute period is 95 percent. What is the chance of observing a car in ten-minute period? Please help her to marry Fredy!

  1. Let p is a probability to see a car in 10 minutes.
    Then (1-p) is probability NOT to see a car in 10 minutes.
    Then probability NOT to see a car in 30 minutes is (1-p)*(1-p)*(1-p).
    (1-p)^3 == 0.05
    So p = 1-0.05^(1/3)~ 0.63
